What is an e-book, sometimes called an ebook or e-reader or ereader?

An e-book reader, also called an e-book device or e-reader, is a portable electronic device that is designed primarily for the purpose of reading digital books and periodicals.

An e-book reader is similar in form to a tablet computer. A tablet computer typically has a faster screen capable of higher refresh rates which makes them more suitable for interaction. The main advantages of e-book readers are better readability of their screens especially in bright sunlight and longer battery life. This is achieved by using electronic paper technology to display content to readers on the e-book.

Any device that can display text on a screen can act as an e-book reader, or an e-reader, but without the advantages of the e-paper technology.

Jetbook eReader by Ectaco

Ectaco Jetbook eReader

5. Jetbook eReader by Ectaco, priced at $199

Ectaco showed off their new jetBook Lite eBook at the Frankfurt Book Fair. As you can see from the above video it looks to be a very simple eReader with a five inch TFT monochromatic screen. It’s chock full of menu and selector buttons and instead of charging with a traditional internal battery, the jetBook Lite takes four AA batteries. Normally this would add some much-hated bulk to an eReader but Ectaco engineered it so that the added width for the battery compartment acts as a nice handhold for your left hand. In fact it looks like it’d be much more comfortable to hold than most slab tablet eReaders on the market.

Ectaco says they’re going to introduce the jetBook Lite to the American market shortly for a retail price of $149 which would make it the most affordable eBook on the market (beating out Sony’s Pocket Edition Reader and BeBook Mini). While it doesn’t use the traditional E-Ink screens of most eReaders, the TFT LCD means that page switching will be much faster and have none of the E-Ink’s notorious flashes between pages. Ectaco also says that four AA batteries will allow 23 hours of use.

ECTACO has revolutionized the way you read with the JetBook eBook reader! At just 7.5 ounces and with dimensions smaller than a standard hardcover novel, the JetBook lets you carry a stack of books in the palm of your hand and read them wherever you want. It comes preloaded with the CIA World Factbook and a German Dictionary, and can hold thousands more texts with support for an optional SD memory card up to 2GB in size. With its USB mass storage capability, simply connect the JetBook to your PC via USB and drag and drop new content; you can also back up what you already have on the device instantly. The battery is charged via the included power supply or USB, and once charged can provide you over 20 hours of continuous active use, so you will always be ready to read.

Sporting a reflective, long lasting coating, the huge 5-inch VGA screen is easy on the eyes under various lighting conditions (including direct sunlight) and won’t get dirty even after extended use. With screen rotation support, you can always read your eBooks in the most comfortable and suitable manner. Even readers who have difficulty seeing print books will have no trouble with this reader's adjustable text size and font face.

An MP3 player rounds out the advanced features, so you can listen to your favorite music as you read. The well placed control buttons let you move forward or backward, add bookmarks, choose font sizes or rotate the screen simply by pressing the corresponding button. You can read almost anything on the JetBook, with its native support for over 10 different file formats including PDF, Mobi, HTML, TXT, MP3, BMP, JPG and more. Get yourself this versatile eBook reader from ECTACO now and experience the joy of reading in a uniquely different style!

jetBook features include:

Users can take handwritten notes with the stylus pen or type with the virtual keyboard. All notes can be exported and printed out for easy reference. The Touch Edition also offers five adjustable font sizes, as well as expansion slots for both Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD card, making your portable library virtually limitless.

The PRS-600, known as the "Touch Edition," was announced at the same time as the PRS-300 and is the replacement for the PRS-700 model (although it is missing the front-light feature). It is Sony's higher-scale, touch-screen edition of the reader. It has a similar interface to the PRS-700. 9. Elonex eBook, priced at 169.00 British Pounds

The Elonex eBook Reader is an exclusive product to Borders Bookshop and online website here in the UK. The first thing that strikes you when you pick up the Elones eBook Reader is the size and weight. It has the same sized 6 inch screen as the Sony PRS-600, however is is not so thick, and weighs only about 180g – smaller and lighter than the Sony PRS-600 and the Amazon Kindle.

The EBook uses the well known e-ink technology which tries to replicate as closely as possible the effect that you are actually reading a hard copy book with real ink. The screen does do a good job of replicating genuine printing, but as with all e-ink screens, the screen needs to be reset on each page turn. This means the screen will go black, and then show the content in reverse before showing it correctly. This does, in our view, become very irritating, especially if you are in the middle of a gripping chapter.

The Elonex eBook does score well in battery life, apparently one charge will enable you to have 8,000 page turns – which when you think about it is phenominal performance.

The EBook does support a wide array of formats, from html through to PDF, however performance of these differing formats was indifferent to say the least, with a common problem centering around when images were needed to be displayed.

A smart feature of the EBook is the facility to turn the eBook reader on it’s side and read the books in landscape format – something that is particularly helpful if you want to zoom in on the text.

The EBook is an eBook Reader that is simplified from the likes of the Amazon Kindle – there are no fancy keyboard, wireless connection and no automaticlly connected eBook account, this means that the convenience of being able to download new eBooks on the move is removed with this eBook Reader. If storage is a priority, then the 512MB capacity will enable you to store up to 1000 eBooks and additional space can be created by buying an additional 4GB SD Card.

One thing that the office here at eReaderPrices noticed with the EBook Reader, is that although they have successfully managed to create a small lightweight eBook Reader, they have created an eBook Reader that feels almost slightly cheap and flimsy.
